IBM
eServer XSeries 440
IBM has recently hit the market with its eServer xSeries 440 that offers a “building-block”-style, highly reliable architecture that allows customers to pay for computing power incrementally as they need it, and is designed to support up to 16 processors and 64 GB of memory.

This server with Enterprise X-Architecture technology, caps a three-year development effort to build an exceptionally powerful Intel-based machine, using industry standard technologies, that is designed to handle the core applications that power e-businesses. The x440 performs smoothly with the Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server product to offer users high reliability and scalability, says the company.

The IBM eServer x440 is aimed at e-businesses where it provides a platform for both server consolidation and large, single system applications. The x440 can be used as a single big server to run a large database for business intelligence, or to consolidate many small “virtual servers”—such as multiple e-mail servers under one roof—to reduce costs. The eServer x440 supports the Microsoft Windows OS within a single SMP configuration, and also is designed to support up to four physical partitions or up to 64 virtual partitions.

Powered by IBM’s Enterprise X-architecture technology, the x440 server is designed to scale to 16 Intel 1A-32 Xeon processors MP—twice the number of processors in an 8U system than the nearest competitor with a 7U system, and four times the processors of most other shipped Intel Xeon-based systems, says IBM.

In addition, this server’s XpandOnDemand technology helps customers meet unexpected growth in their businesses. A simple “pay as you grow” configuration option, XpandOn Demand is an alternative to other expensive, complex offerings. With planned 16-way support from IBM, businesses can start with a single 4-way building-block and increase computing capacity to enable support for up to 16-processor systems using additional 4-processor modules when needed.

TVS Electronic has recently launched a bill printer. Christened TVS Proton, this printer is targeted at the retail customer.

This printer replaces the traditional CPS (characters per second) metric with BPM (Bill Per Minute) and promises to set new technology standards in the category. TVS Proton is capable of printing ten bills per minute. The front paper path has a dust collector, which simplifies the cleaning of the printer. Also, this printer comes with a unique “Built-in roll paper feeder”.

Norman
Internet Protection
NVC v5.4 introduced Norman Internet Protection (NIP)—a filter that protects your workstation against viruses that spread through the Internet. NIP is designed to intercept incoming and outgoing mail, stripping or blocking all infected attachments for undesired content.

NIP is a workstation-based tool that acts as your personal proxy. In other words, your e-mail program connects to NIP, which then connects to your e-mail server. Thus NIP is authorised to monitor inbound and outbound e-mails and scan them for malware. NIP is not only capable of scanning e-mails for known viruses, it can also warn the sender about a possible infection and block file attachments depending on content and file extensions.

NVC v5 focuses on the management of software and the cost of ownership. NIP monitors the most prevalent messaging protocols and supports most popular e-mail clients. As an integrated component in NVC 5, it can be distributed to all workstations throughout your network, establishing yet another barrier against the increasing threat from e-mail viruses.
