Linux next
I salute Express Computer for its front page story ‘Red Hat wants the piece of the desktop’ and the News Analysis article, ‘Can LG India extend Linux to the desktop’ (Express Computer, November 25, 2002). Many corporates are shifting to the Linux operating system, but home users still prefer Microsoft. This is basically due to lack of awareness. Most users don’t care about what system they are using as long as they can check and send e-mail, run basic applications and surf the Net. Also, most people are not aware of the advantages of using Linux. The media should educate people on the Linux advantage. Even computer resellers should be encouraged to promote usage of Linux by loading the software. Anyone who wants a Microsoft system can have one on demand. Computer institutes should also make alternative systems like Linux a part of their course syllabus.

Flavour of the moment
Web services seem to be the flavour of the month—with almost all magazines and newspapers talking about how this phenomenon will revolutionise the business sector. But most are still not sure about the standardisation process around the security of these services. In current times, this is the most critical factor that needs to be addressed before looking into other aspects. Vendors should ensure that they get together to develop and adopt the necessary standards instead of trying to one-up each other and not reach anywhere. Also, things should be kept as simple as possible without compromising on quality.

Role model
The Andhra Pradesh government is setting a good example by encouraging small and medium sized technology companies to work in a consortium mode and leverage joint capabilities. This idea should be explored by other states as well and all the pros and cons should be clearly stated out. In these hard times using each others strengths can only prove beneficial to all involved.

Cell vs WLL
The burgeoning cellular services sector seems to be headed for some bad times. With Reliance and Tata entering the market with their WLL services, the cellular guys will have to part with a major chunk of their revenues. Though they are fighting it out in court they don’t stand much of a chance, especially because even WLL service providers have paid the government huge sums in the form of license fees. Also, with the recent focus on the consumer and his rights, it’s his opinion that matters in the end. And the consumer only stands to win with WLL.

MumbaiIT in Arab land
The Gulf seems to be one market, which Indian IT companies are targeting in a big way. Though not a very large market, it can still contribute a lot to the country’s IT export revenues. Also, there are added advantages when its comes to Gulf countries. The language barrier, which poses a problem when it comes to dealing with countries like Japan, Germany or Italy is not applicable here, as most business dealings are done in English. The Indian government and the IT sector should make more sincere efforts to develop the India Inc. brand in this region.
