Between the Bytes

The soul of a new magazine
“Be careful,” my well-meaning but decidedly risk-averse friends and relatives warned me. “They’ll make you slog and then pay you a pittance, if anything!” But throwing caution to the wind, I took up the project to launch India’s first weekly IT newsmagazine back in the spring of 1990.

NOSTALGIA

The making of an educated man
1995. Bombay was renamed Mumbai. Al Jazeera was something you drank to help digestion. F C Kohli was a year younger than God. Microsoft launched an OS which had more bugs than a street mongrel. The Indian IT industry was worth about Rs 3,000 crore. Okay, give or take a couple of thousands.

Phulowri Bina Chutney Kaise Bani?
Phulowri bina chutney kaise bani? How can you make dumplings without the chutney? This Bhojpuri song is apt to describe the role of EC. The IT media industry cannot be complete without Express Computer—the original.

My life at Express Computer
My life as a geek started off in the dungeons of a software company as a technical writer. In a vast cubicle farm that would have made Dilbert feel right at home, I would slave over computer screens and try to describe how software programs should be used. Those were the hoary old days of PC XTs and 5-1/2 inch floppy disks, when you did a ‘Control-S’ and could feel the computer chug away industriously to save your files.

What INDIA INC. SAYS about us
Express Computer allows me to keep track of technology trends. This is one of the few publications that gives coverage to both big players as well as new innovations coming from start-ups. They highlight trends with an understanding of the technology domain.
